tech, media, society
- Being Glue helped me understand the kind of "important but hidden" work I frequently end up doing
- various posts from Joel on Software, namely the Top 10
- we can have a different web encouraging people to express individuality outside of the big corporate social media platforms
- DJing for my birthday, about self-promotion on big web platforms. (archive.org link bc it was switch to paid at some point)
psych stuff that has helped me improve myself:
- mechanisms of psychological aversion (understanding helpful/unhelpful "latched" patterns in your brain)
- the gen z resilience drought
- "Life isn’t meant to be constantly laborious, but it isn’t meant to be easy. The assumption that it is meant to be easy will make it feel laborious."
- Indispensability vs disposability culture
- "I believe that [...] we created the so-called call-out culture (a culture of toxic confrontation and shaming people for oppressive behavior that is more about the performance of righteousness than the actual pursuit of justice) in part so that we could focus on the failings of others and avoid examining the complicity with oppression, the capacity to abuse, that exists within us all."
- lots of stuff from Experimental History, but most notably:
- how to feel bad and be wrong (attribute substitution, i.e. unrecognized heuristics, social proof, biased judgement)
- there's a place for everyone (encouragement to seek out and take pride in your niche instead of forcing yourself into a standard track)
- Stories, romance, and ham & cheese croissants (friendship can be loving and intimate, too)
- the electric fence stopped working years ago (imaginary barriers keep us from real opportunities)
